Marketing Strategy and Planning

To Help You Reach Your Goals

Here’s a scenario for you. A creative team has made an awesome video for you, along with some quality graphics. You want to use these new creatives to grow your business. But how? The answer has to do with media planning.

One of our mantras over here at VIP Marketing is “Prior planning prevents poor performance.” This idea is exceptionally true when you’re kicking off a brand new marketing campaign.

At its core, media planning is the method you use to spread your message to your audience. Most businesses believe you’re pretty much done once you get your creative assets in your hands. This just isn’t the case. What you do with your message is as important as the actual message.

SO WHAT DO I DO?

A message is nothing without a plan. So you’re going to need to take a step back from your awesome creative and think about your audience. Who needs this message? Who is most likely to become a future customer or client? What’s the best way to reach them? Think of your marketing goals as you would your home. People start at different places and take different roads to arrive at your home. Similarly, your audience will be introduced to your business in different ways. They’ll ultimately wind up also taking a variety of different routes before becoming a client or customer, as well.

WHERE DO I START?

A simple media plan starts with covering the 5 Ws (and 1 H). When you find yourself completely lost, start your media planning by asking yourself:

  1. Who is your audience?
  2. What are you selling?
  3. When is the campaign starting/ending?
  4. Why are you starting a campaign?
  5. Where is your market?
  6. How are you going to do it all?

Once you have answers to each of these questions, you’re well on your way to a media plan. Providing these answers will give you an overall idea of your plan.

WHAT DOES GOOD MEDIA PLANNING LOOK LIKE?

A good media plan begins by addressing each of the above questions. Then, depending on your goals and budget, you assign time and talent accordingly. Most businesses need to figure out which media outlets to take on, as well. Very few have the ability to run full campaigns on all media options. Would your campaign work best on Social Media? Maybe your message fits best on network TV. These choices sculpt your final media plan.
