The marketing world is shifting fast. And if you're a law firm owner who relies on SEO and paid ads to generate leads, you're going to want to pay attention to this.
A recent report comparing search engine traffic to chatbot usage from April 2024 to March 2025 revealed something big: while search engines still dominate, AI chatbots are catching up, fast.
Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense for law firm marketers and decision-makers.
Google alone received 1.63 trillion visits over the past year. To put that in perspective, it’s more than 88% of all search traffic globally.
Even when combining all search engines, Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc., users still visited search engines 34 times more than they did AI chatbots. That’s a massive gap, but it’s closing.

While chatbot traffic only made up 2.96% of search traffic, usage grew by over 80% year-over-year.
And guess who’s leading the charge? ChatGPT, with 47.7 billion visits, that’s 86% of all chatbot traffic.
Other bots like Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and even Microsoft’s Copilot are rising, too, showing growth rates in the thousands of percent.
If you’re a law firm that advertises online, especially in personal injury, you know how competitive it is to rank on Google or show up in paid search. The cost-per-click is high. The cost-per-case is even higher. And everyone is chasing the same leads.
But AI chatbots represent a new frontier.
People are starting to ask ChatGPT questions like:
“Who’s the best personal injury lawyer near me?”
“How do I file a car accident claim?”
“Can I sue for medical malpractice in South Carolina?”
Unlike traditional search engines, where SEO is well established and hyper-competitive, chatbot optimization is still early. That means less competition and more opportunity to get ahead before everyone catches on.
This isn't about abandoning search engines. Google still reigns. But if your law firm wants to stay ahead, now is the time to start thinking beyond search.
Here’s what you can do:
